Strange things are happening in this small town, but Shuuichi is determined to live a quiet and peaceful life. That is until he meets Clair, a girl with a dark past who knows his secret!
For reasons unknown, Shuuichi can transform into a giant monster that resembles a sports mascot. He gains incredible strength and endurance and has heightened senses. That’s not all, however, as he has a zipper running down his back which when opened, someone can climb inside and wear him like a costume. He didn’t know this until he teamed up with Clair, a girl that is trying to get to the bottom of the appearances of monsters, especially as her sister became one and killed her parents.
As they try to track down Clair’s sister, Elena, they stumble upon a very strange and dangerous situation. There is an alien that can grant wishes in exchange for coins which are effectively his colleagues that were lost when his ship crash-landed. If anyone can collect one hundred coins they will be granted god-like powers. Shuuichi and Clair are determined to stop anything like that happening, but that is easier said than done.
I’ll be the first to admit that the story sounds completely bonkers. Even if you just start with the fact that the hero turns into a costume that a girl wears should be enough for you to think that this show is nuts. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, it is a little crazy, but in the best way imaginable. I was absolutely captivated with this series and when I wasn’t watching it, I was thinking about it and trying to guess what might happen next. It is nothing short of incredible and I am desperate for a second season.
Shuuichi Kagaya starts the series being incredibly dull and bland. He really doesn’t have any drive or goals whatsoever. Luckily, Clair burst into his life and shook it up. Even then, it took a while for him to really come into the role he’d been assigned and thankfully, once he did, he really grabbed the reigns. His backstory is tragic and incredible. We really need to find out more.
Clair Aoki is an incredible character. Not only does she push the story forward, but she solves problems and not once falls into the damsel in distress archetype. If anything, she’s the one constantly saving everyone else. On top of that, Clair has the most infectious smile and a crazy range of expressions. As soon as I saw her in the first episode, I knew she was going to be amazing.
Elena Aoki is Clair’s sister and former friend of Shuuichi, although she erased Shuuichi’s memories. Elena has a terrifying power which we haven’t yet fully seen. Another reason to deliver a second season. I loved the mystery around Elena and Shuuichi’s past and there were some incredible moments. While Elena starts out as a villain, she’s much more of a grey character and that makes her really interesting.
There’s a fair bit of fan service although it’s generally focused on panty shots and underwear. While several of the characters spend some amount of time naked, nothing is really shown other than the occasional bum. However, it fits with the tone of the show and had it been full of bouncing boobs then it might not have worked so well. It’s a more calm and understated approach to fan service and I really enjoyed it.
Story Rating: Excellent
I absolutely loved the story and how it delved into some really odd and dark things. On paper, it doesn’t sound like it should work, but it was enthralling. It’s possibly my favourite show of the year so far. I really hope we get a second season, although I believe that the manga would need to get a little further ahead before there’s enough material to continue.
Ecchi Rating: Hot
I’m actually going to go with Hot here because of how well it fits the tone of the story. The understated and more relaxed approach to fan service worked really well here and didn’t pull you out of the story. I think it could have even pushed things a little further with the nudity and not lost the feel, but that’s a small criticism.
Basically, this series was incredible. If you like your stories a little darker then you are going to love this one. If you’re just after more ecchi, then I would recommend you check out Tsugumomo, but I really can’t recommend Gleipnir enough. Just go watch it, please!
