Another Disquieting Premonition!

Things have settled down since the showdown with Riser Phoenix. Issei’s arm intermittently changes into his dragon form, and we learn that Akeno can temporarily treat it by sucking the magic out. The occult research club holds a meeting at Issei’s house, and they end up looking at old photo albums brought by Issei’s mother. Kiba notices a certain sword in a photo from Issei’s childhood.

Later, the club is dispatched to deal with a rogue devil, and Kiba was spacing out. We end up learning from Rias that he was a survivor of some experiment involving children and holy swords. The episode ends with Kiba running into Freed, who is wielding the holy sword Excalibur.

Episode Thoughts

This episode wasted no time jumping into a new plotline, although I’m sure Kiba won’t be the sole subject of this season. There was some pretty good ecchi this time, as always, but once again I’m just not a fan of Asia in this episode. Especially how she’s trying to compete with Rias, it just doesn’t work for me. Feels too forced I guess, I don’t know, I just don’t like it. I think Asia should be more like Koneko in terms of fan service: unintentional. Like falling down for panty shots, torn clothes in battles, things like that.

Anyways, I think it was a good episode to get things going once again!

I absolutely agree about Asia’s role in this feeling wrong and appearing completely force. It seems so out of character for her too. Otherwise, I can’t really complain. It’s DxD as it should be – full of Rias and Akeno. It feels a little like Issei has gone backwards from the end of the first season where he was putting his life on the line and literally bursting girls out of their clothing. Now, he’s back to being afraid of boobs again…

I did have to laugh at Irina carrying around the same photo that Issei had in his album. If you’re going to prove you used to live here, a photo of some kid indoors doesn’t really do it for you. I’m excited to see Xenovia come into the series as she’s one of my favourites. I’m also curious about the Japanese obsession with holy swords like Excalibur and Durendal

  1. I actually really liked how Asia was more forward, and actively not just giving up to Rias. Girl’s gotta fight for her man.

    • I liked Asia as a contrast, playing the more innocent role with the accidental ecchi moments. The more aggressive and assertive Asia feels like a big change from her role in the first series.

      • Which I think shows her growth, that she isn’t going to just lay down and let Rias, and later, Akeno, come in and take away Issei. Not when she’s up against two bombshells, girl’s gotta strut her stuff.

        • I’m not so sure I’d call it growth. Issei already liked her despite her less in your face approach. It would have been nice to show two different forms of attraction with Rias going overly sexual and Asia going with a slower approach. Both are acceptable methods and it would have been interesting to see the two contrasting against one another.

        • I feel like she loses part of what made her cute when she acts so shameless like that. She already feels more like a close friend to Issei, so I feel like that angle would feel more natural for her to pursue, with her spending time with him and being cute / a klutz.

I don’t find it believable that she could compete with Rias / Akeno with just raw sexuality.

          • Which is also why she really doesn’t do it again. She’s a teenager trying to compete, so she’s going to make mistakes. I thought it was a nice moment. Yeah, it’s not ‘who she is’, but it felt nice to see Asia step outside her comfort zone.

Either way, it was funny moment.

          • Yeah I don’t really remember what happens after this, her character has plenty of time to situate at this point in time anyways.
