Kanaka is reborn and is determined to kill her son, Kazuya. To do that, she’ll need to defeat two local gods, one regional god, a priestess, and another exorcist. Oh, and there’s the Mayoiga Tsukumogamis to worry about too!
Well, it took Kanaka all of two seconds to defeat the Tsukumogamis with her bare hands. Now to focus on the main event. The main problem here is that Kazuya needs to be the one to finish Kanaka otherwise there would be a catastrophic Malison atonement that would likely destroy the entire city and probably more. That said, there are plenty to try to wear Kanaka down beforehand. Taguri and Omoikane take the fight to Kanaka and are joined by Kukuri who is using all of her power now.
They appear to have knocked her back, but when Kukuri calls on Kazuya to finish her off, he hesitates. It’s enough time for Azami to separate from Kanaka and lands serious blows on Taguri and Omoikane. Sunao who had been using Divine Possession collapsed from the exertion. That left Kukuri to face Kanaka alone. After a bit of back and forth, Kukuri unleashed her most powerful form and prepared to end it.
Kanaka was ready for her though as half of Azami had been watching Kazuya’s fights and learning from them. She used Divine Possession and was able to strike Kukuri, punching a hole in her chest and removing her god fragment. With Kukuri out of the way, Kanaka turned her attention to Kazuya. He tried to fight back with Kiriha and Divine Possession, but they were no match for Kanaka. It looked like it was over for Kazuya, but Kiriha sacrificed herself and bought him some precious time.
His sister, Kasumi arrived seconds later and with her hourglass Tsugumomo, she trapped Kanaka in a time-bubble for three years, telling Kazuya that he needed to get strong enough to defeat her by then.
This episode floored me. I came in expecting an epic fight or two and then an over the top bath scene. The second half did not come to be, but I have absolutely no complaints. Tsugumomo is an incredible series and the fights are unreal. Kanaka has waltzed into the final two episodes and pretty much stolen the show. I knew that this series has bounced back and forth between the lighthearted ecchi moments and the darker more serious moments, but even then, there isn’t an alternate universe where I was expecting Kukuri and Kiriha to die…
There has to be a third season. Although there hasn’t been an announcement yet, I will be keeping watch. I came into this series not knowing what to expect and admittedly only started it because the second season was about to air. The crazy thing is that I’ve barely seen any chatter about it online and I can’t help but think that a lot of people are missing out. I’d love to know what you thought of this episode and how the season ended. And if anyone has any information on season three, please let me know.
