When Mamori is found to be infected with A-Virus, she is abducted and transported to the top-secret quarantine facility – Mermaid Island. She’s attacked by two girls who start kissing and then one turns into a gun! WTF!
Before Mamori can get a handle on what’s going on, another girl is transported to the island. She defends Mamori and then starts kissing her. Mamori has absolutely no idea what is going on, but she then turns into a sword! Seriously, what is going on? With the two girls taken care of, Mamori and Mirei head off into the jungle. They soon stumble upon a large white castle at the centre of the island and head inside.
Unfortunately, they’ve walked right into a trap and find themselves face to face with two more girls. This time, one dominates the other and turns her into a massive weapon. Mirei does her best to keep Mamori safe, but it’s not looking good. Then, Mamori tells her to kiss her and use her as a weapon to save them. She does and she does! They are then separated as the ones in charge decide what to do with these new girls.
It’s probably best to point out that the story is completely bonkers, but it’s actually quite good. Sure, there’s not a lot of depth to the characters but they all play their parts well and at the heart of everything is a sweet love story between Mirei and Mamori. It’s probably not what you’re expecting, but it’s there and overall I enjoyed this series. There were some filler episodes in the middle that didn’t really go anywhere or serve much of a purpose, but the main story was good enough.
Mirei Shikishima is the action hero of the story and does pretty much all the fighting for Mamori and the others. She’s a former soldier and has been augmented with the A-Virus to make her more dangerous. I’m not sure if it was love at first sight, but she became instantly protective of Mamori and it remained that way all through the series. It was their love for one another that enabled Mirei to break free from Momoka’s grip and free Mamori so that they could unite to become the ultimate weapon.
Mamori Tokonome came to Mermaid Island with no idea what was going on or even what the A-Virus was. Her reaction to the two girls making out in front of her when she first arrived was priceless and pretty much personified her naive and hopeful attitude. She didn’t take to Mirei as quickly as Mirei did to her, but I think that was mostly because she was in denial that she liked girls. It took Mirei burst through a large stained glass window to rescue her before she really saw it and even then, she probably wasn’t fully committed.
Meifon Sakura is the girl you go to see if you need something done. She may not appear like much but she has a way of finding what you need and then extorting something out of you. She’s also not a bad person, but she definitely looks out for herself above all others. That said, when it came to it, she was willing to throw it all away to help Mirei and Mamori. Her love of money is the biggest driving factor and even enables her to drive with cash instead of a female partner!
Rain Hasumi and Lady J are a couple of former agents for an intelligence service and have come to Mermaid island to uncover its secrets. They are an odd pair in that both are capable of driving the other and without much effort either. I feel like they are the Valkyrie Drive equivalent of the Hulk. While he’s always angry, they are always horny! They are incredibly tough and can even combine to create an even more powerful weapon, one that Mirei rides into battle in the epic final showdown with Momoka.
Akira Hiragi is the Governeur of Mermaid Island and the only male… psyche! Akira is actually a girl, but hide that fact so that she could take control of the island, because, of course, you would ask the only guy to run an island populated by women… that makes no sense, but that’s the least of you worries. If you can work out how Akira hid her incredible boobs you’ll win all of the points. All of them. Seriously though, Akira is stunning!
Momoka Sagara is the big bad villain in this story. She was another of the girls experimented on along with Mirei and even partnered with her for a while before they decided that Mirei was expendable. She showed up on Mermaid Island and quickly threw everything out of whack, seducing Charlotte, dethroning Akira, and capturing Mamori. It’s safe to say that Momoka really helped give us the epic finish that this series really needed and deserved. Those last couple of episodes were insane and in a good way.
Well, if you like fan-service then this is the ecchi series for you. It’s an island full of girls who can make each other turn into weapons by making out and getting all hot and bothered. That’s right, my friend. It’s all girls kissing and groping one another. Then, it’s all girls fighting and exposing more and more flesh. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also plenty of hot pool scenes and the one with Akira and Torino Kazumi is one of my favourite ecchi scenes ever. This series is hot and you should make sure that no one can walk in on you while watching it as there is no way to explain what they just saw…
Story Rating: Good
There are moments where this story is a lot of fun and there are times when it really doesn’t do much. Overall, it was good, but there was the potential for so much more without sacrificing any of the ecchi. If anything a slightly tighter storyline would have just made this that much more of a great series. As it is now, it’s going to be hard to recommend to anyone that doesn’t enjoy ecchi as that is the main element and the story isn’t strong enough for viewers to overlook it. If you do like ecchi, and you’re here aren’t you, then this is a great mix of ecchi and story.
Ecchi Rating: Smoking
This series is completely unashamed of the ecchi content and that’s great. There are more nipples than you can probably count and they are all incredibly detailed. Seriously, the art team behind this series must love drawing nipples and girls kissing. To be fair, that’s not a bad passion to have. You can expect just about everything in Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid and if you like ecchi, you simply cannot afford to miss this one.
I’m not sure what else to say, but I’ll see what I can do. This series has so much ecchi content that you may even become blind to it… sorry, I meant blind! You know what they say about too much of a good thing, don’t you… Anyhow, it is hot, hot, hot and the story is engaging enough that I think you’ll have a good time watching it. Unless, of course, you don’t care for hot girls kissing one another… then you’ll probably hate it, but then you already hate life, so what’s new!
